APPROPRIATENESS OF ORCHECTOMY IN TREATMENT OF MEN WITH BREAST CANCER
Findings are presented of the analysis of the efficacy of orchectomy (OE) in men with breast cancer (BC) at stages ІІ, ІІІ, and ІV. The average age of patients who were treated with OE was 56.8 years. The efficacy of OE was measured based on the life span of patients as compared to the group of patients randomized in terms of age and stage in whom this method was not applied. OE did not influence of the overall survival of BC patients at stage ІІ. In case of locally disseminated BC (stage ІІІ), OE resulted in an improved 5- and 10-year survival rates (50% in the group of patients after OE compared to 19% in the non-OE group). The difference in the survival rates of the two groups is very close to a statistically significant one (р=0.053). In BC patients at stage IV, OE is not rec- ommended as it does not improve the overall survival rate. The age of BC mail patients is not a factor for purposes of making decision on the advisability of OE.
