LYMPH SYSTEM OF THE THYROID GLAND AND SPECIFICS OF LYMPHOGENIC METASTASIZING OF THYROID CANCER

Y.M. Sternyuk

Findings are analyzed dealing with the specifics of lymphogenic metastasizing of thyroid cancer (TC). A dense net of lymphatic capillaries in both parts of the thyroid gland is a factor of intra organ metastasizing and necessitates thyreoidectomy. Though the prognostic role of metastases in regional lymph nodes (especially in papillar and medullar TC) has been doubted for a long time, it is established currently. This means that an anatomic/pathologic/ surgery classification of the zones of lymph outflow should be applied. In this, 4 pools (compartments) with different frequency of metastasizing are identified, including: cervical/central (42–86%), ipsilateral cervicolateral (32–68%), counterlateral cervicolateral (12–24%), and mediastinal (3– 20%). The specifics of metastasizing of different morphologic forms of TC are analyzed.
